What Are Bed Bugs?

Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are small, reddish-brown parasitic insects that feed exclusively on the blood of humans and warm-blooded animals. Adults are roughly the size of an apple seed — about 5–7mm long — flat, oval-shaped, and wingless.

Despite their name, bed bugs don't only live in beds. They hide in any crack or crevice near a sleeping host: mattress seams, box springs, bed frames, headboards, baseboards, electrical outlets, and even behind picture frames.

In Arizona's warm climate, bed bugs thrive year-round. The heat accelerates their lifecycle and makes infestations spread faster than in cooler states — making early detection and professional treatment critical.

The Bed Bug Lifecycle

Understanding the lifecycle helps explain why infestations grow so quickly and why professional treatment is often necessary.

01

Egg

6–10 days to hatch

Eggs are tiny (1mm), white, and nearly invisible to the naked eye. A female lays 1–5 eggs per day in hidden crevices.

02

Nymph (5 stages)

5 weeks to mature

Nymphs must feed at least once between each of their 5 molts. They are smaller and lighter in color than adults.

03

Adult

6–12 months lifespan

Adults are reddish-brown, flat, and oval. They feed every 5–10 days and can survive months without a meal.

Where Do Bed Bugs Come From?

Bed bugs don't appear out of nowhere — they hitchhike. Here are the most common ways they enter Arizona homes.

Travel & Hotels

Hotels, motels, and vacation rentals are the #1 source. Bed bugs crawl into luggage, clothing, and bags left on infested furniture.

Used Furniture

Second-hand mattresses, bed frames, sofas, and dressers are common carriers. Always inspect used furniture thoroughly before bringing it inside.

Visitors & Guests

Guests can unknowingly bring bed bugs in their luggage or clothing from their own infested home or a recent hotel stay.

Multi-Unit Housing

Apartments and condos allow bed bugs to migrate through walls, electrical conduits, and shared spaces between units.

Deliveries & Packages

Rarely, bed bugs can hitch a ride in shipping boxes or packaging, especially from warehouses with infestations.

Schools & Daycares

Children can pick up bed bugs from backpacks, coats, or shared seating areas and bring them home without anyone knowing.

Warning Signs

Warning Signs of an Infestation

Bed bugs are nocturnal and expert hiders. Most people don't realize they have an infestation until it's well established. Know what to look for.

01

Bite Marks

Small, red, itchy welts on exposed skin — often in a line or cluster pattern on arms, neck, and shoulders. Not everyone reacts to bites.

02

Blood Stains on Sheets

Tiny rust-colored or reddish spots on your sheets or pillowcases from crushed bed bugs or feeding wounds.

03

Dark Fecal Spots

Small dark brown or black dots (about the size of a pen tip) on mattress seams, box springs, or nearby walls — bed bug excrement.

04

Shed Skins

Pale yellow, empty exoskeletons left behind as nymphs molt through their 5 growth stages. Found in hiding spots near the bed.

05

Musty Odor

A sweet, musty, or "coriander-like" smell in the bedroom can indicate a large infestation. Produced by the bugs' scent glands.

06

Live Bugs

Spotting a live bed bug — especially in mattress seams, behind headboards, or in electrical outlets — confirms an active infestation.

Prevention

Prevention Tips for Arizona Residents

You can't always prevent exposure, but you can dramatically reduce your risk with these habits.

01

Inspect Hotel Rooms

Before unpacking, check the mattress seams, headboard, and box spring. Keep luggage on the luggage rack, never on the bed or floor.

02

Protect Your Mattress

Use bed bug-proof encasements on your mattress and box spring. These trap any existing bugs and prevent new ones from hiding inside.

03

Inspect Used Items

Thoroughly inspect any second-hand furniture, clothing, or electronics before bringing them into your home. When in doubt, leave it out.

04

Reduce Clutter

Clutter gives bed bugs more places to hide. Keep your bedroom tidy and minimize items stored under the bed.

05

Wash & Dry on High Heat

After travel, wash all clothing on hot and dry on high heat for at least 30 minutes. Heat above 120°F kills bed bugs at all life stages.

06

Act Fast at First Signs

If you suspect bed bugs, call a professional immediately. Early-stage infestations are far easier and less expensive to treat.
